How a sump pump works
Groundwater collects in the sump pit. When the water rises, a float switch activates the pump, which discharges water away from the foundation.
Common failure points
- Power loss during storms
- Stuck float switch
- Clogged inlet screen
- Frozen or blocked discharge line
- Old or undersized pump
Reduce the risk
Test the pump each season, keep the pit clear of debris and consider a battery backup. Have a plumber inspect pumps that are noisy, cycle constantly or are near the end of their lifespan.
