1. Put safety first
Do not walk into standing water if it may be in contact with outlets, extension cords, appliances or the electrical panel. If you can't safely reach the panel, contact your utility or an electrician.
2. Stop the source if you can
For plumbing leaks, shut off the main water valve. For sump pump problems, check whether the pump has power. If water is coming from outside or the floor drain, there may be little you can do until it subsides.
3. Document everything
- Photos and video of water levels and affected rooms
- Damaged belongings, with brand and model where possible
- The time you discovered the water
- Any communication with your insurer
4. Move belongings and call for help
Lift what you can off the floor and move valuables upstairs. Then call a water damage restoration company to remove water and start drying. The sooner materials are dried, the better the outcome tends to be.
