• Keep eavestroughs and downspouts clear
• Extend downspouts to discharge well away from the foundation
• Make sure soil slopes away from the house
• Check window wells for drainage and covers

Inside the home

• Test your sump pump before storm season
• Consider a battery backup pump
• Ask a plumber whether a backwater valve is appropriate
• Avoid storing valuables directly on basement floors
