Why pipes burst

When water freezes it expands, raising pressure inside the pipe. The break often happens where pressure builds up, which isn't always where the ice is.

Prevention tips

• Insulate pipes in garages, crawl spaces and exterior walls
• Disconnect garden hoses and shut off outdoor taps before winter
• Keep the heat on when travelling
• Open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls during cold snaps

If a pipe bursts

Shut off the main water valve, turn off electricity to affected areas if safe, and call a plumber for the repair and a restoration company for water removal and drying.
